About
Us
When
my first Chesapeake was about 6 mos old, I started to take her to obedience
classes for socialization. We
were doing well and we were having fun. I
decided to continue with obedience and began showing competitively when she was
14 mos. old finishing her CD title at 2 years of age. Obedience is so important for every area that you may ever do
with your dog. Get a good
foundation and it will help towards all your goals.
That
first year that I had Nyagwai, a friend told me, “If you have a Chesapeake you
need to take her duck hunting !” So
they introduced me to duck hunting and I am hooked. I became a member of our local North American Hunting
Retriever Club (NAHRA) known as the Presque Isle Retriever Club in the spring of
1994. I was elected to the board in
1998 - 2005 and served as President of the Presque Isle Retriever Club
during 1999, 2000 and 2001.
It
has been a rewarding experience training and handling my dogs in the different
levels of competition. Currently, I am handling my dog in NAHRA Senior (Master
Hunter level) and AKC hunt test program. I enjoy helping others to learn how to
train and handle their dogs too. I’m involved in running the Presque Isle
Retriever Club monthly fun trials for several years now. I
would highly recommend to anyone to find a local training club. It is certainly helpful in learning how and what you need to
train to develop a great hunting partner. The
hunt tests are a great way to have fun and to evaluate yourself and your dog.
You certainly meet some great people who encourage you along the way.
Since
my first introduction with duck hunting, I have become a serious duck hunter and
usually go out hunting at least several times a week now with my family and
friends. Whether it is hunting for puddle ducks, hunting Lake Erie for divers or
pheasant hunting, I enjoy it all. My
sons and husband have become involved with the sport of duck hunting. Curt and
Anthony train and handle the dogs in hunt tests and while they are hunting.
It is great to see the partnership that develops as they become a team
working towards the same goal.
Handling
my dogs in conformation shows is enjoyable too. My youngest son is involved in
Junior Showmanship as well as taking turns handling our dogs in the regular
classes. We are doing quite well
and it is a nice accomplishment to be doing the showing ourselves.
In this arena we have also met many friendly people.
The
summer of 2000 we tried out agility and had a ball.
As
you can see, things have mushroomed since my first Chesapeake Bay Retriever,
from just having a wonderful family companion, to having four family dogs and
being actively involved in a variety of areas with them. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a very versatile breed.
It is important to me to keep these attributes in my dogs.
